Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the Journalism for Social Change course.

About the Course

This is an 8-week, beginner-friendly programme designed for students, aspiring journalists,
and new storytellers who want to write with purpose and integrity. In a world where narratives
influence public opinion and policy, this course teaches you how to tell stories responsibly, ethically,
and in collaboration with communities.

At the heart of this course is:
Participatory storytelling: co-creating stories with communities
Ethics & safeguarding: consent, processes and trauma-informed writing
Writing for impact: building narratives that shift understanding and inspire change
Responsible reporting: especially on migration, identity, conflict, and social justice issues

The programme is led by Devyani Nighoskar, an independent journalist with 8+ years of experience reporting on gender, labour, migration, and environmental change across India, the UK, and East Africa. Her work is rooted in ethical, participatory, community-centred reporting, and she has trained journalists, NGOs, local governments, and refugee-led organisations in responsible storytelling. Read more about her work here.

We recognise that financial circumstances vary widely across and within countries. To support access, participants are invited to select the payment option that best reflects their situation — including options that enable others to take part, reduced-cost places, and access rates. This programme operates on a trust-based model: participants self-select the option that feels appropriate to them, and no justification or evidence is required. All circumstances are confidentially held and respected.

To keep the programme sustainable, we can offer a limited number of places at reduced and access rates (currently 3 places at £125 and 2 places at £50). Participants are invited to select the option that best reflects their ability to pay.

If you are unable to pay at all or would like to discuss alternative financial arrangements, please contact us directly by emailing blen@creativewritingforsocialchange.com. This will not affect your application. Please note that if we are unable to accommodate you in this session, we will try to do so in the next one.
